untitled-jun28_06-47-40
Captive Culture

Capture Culture is inspired by my experience growing up as an ‘80s Project Baby in Newark, New Jersey (Brick City), and further influenced by Kodak Black’s Project Baby album and life story. Although our stories began in different places, I recognized many of the same realities I witnessed growing up how talent, environment, opportunity, and American systems often collide. Through layered symbolism, this work explores the lasting impact of generational poverty, mass incarceration, the War on Drugs, the school-to-prison pipeline, and the resilience of Black culture.

Every symbol represents a chapter of our story.”

The prison cell symbolizes the school-to-prison pipeline. At its highest point rests a diploma, questioning whether education alone is always enough to escape systems designed to limit opportunity.

Suspended beneath the cell is a balance scale. One side carries books and knowledge, while the other carries the pursuit of money, asking what happens when survival competes with education. The hanging form inside the prison references the history of racial terror and lynching, connecting past systems of oppression to those that continue evolving today.

The cup at the bottom represents lean and the normalization of drug culture within hip-hop. Previous generations often rapped about drugs being sold in their neighborhoods. Today, many young people consume the very substances that once existed only in those stories. The brown leaf represents rolling papers, illustrating how cycles of addiction and escape continue across generations.

The musical symbol forming the eyebrow represents sound the universal language that connects Black culture across generations. Music has always carried our stories, pain, celebration, resistance, and identity.

The open box challenges viewers not to allow themselves to be confined by society or the systems around them. Above it, the crown, shaped like the pyramids, represents Black royalty, ancestry, and inherited greatness.

The colorful brick background pays homage to my hometown of Newark, New Jersey known as Brick City. The bricks represent where I come from, while their vibrant colors celebrate the beauty, creativity, resilience, and cultural richness that continue to emerge from Black communities despite systemic barriers.

Capture Culture is ultimately a conversation about inherited systems, identity, and choice. It invites viewers to look beyond stereotypes and consider how history, policy, music, community, and environment shape generations while reminding us that our circumstances do not define our destiny.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0957/2122/6550/files/FullSizeRender_b7157566-4a93-4a64-839e-ed9a53c3978d.jpg?v=1782887194
